Eurosteel 2023

During Eurosteel 2023, approximately 500 scientists from all over the world will present the latest research results in the field of steel and steel-concrete structures. In addition, there are keynote speeches and discussions about technological developments and scientific challenges. The organization is in the hands of Delft University of Technology, the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, Bouwen met Staal and the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork. This international scientific conference will take place in Amsterdam from Tuesday 12 to Thursday 14 September. This webpage and registration form only applies to the Business Day on 12 September. Different rates apply to participants in the full three-day scientific conference Eurosteel 2023 and to submitters of and speakers about a scientific paper. They register via the special website.

Business day

On Tuesday there is a special program where science and construction practice meet: 'Business Day'. After the welcome speech by conference chairmen Milan Veljkovic (TU Delft) and Andreas Taras (ETH Zurich), the morning program will start with keynote lectures by Jacqueline Cramer (Utrecht University), Olivier Vassart (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and ArcelorMittal) and Christoph Paech (schlaich bergermann partner - sbp). Subsequently, there is a panel discussion about the influence of sustainable building policy measures on scientific research with Johannes Kreißig (World Green Building Council) and Torben Larsen (Give Steel). Orville Breeveld provides the morning program with musical commentary.

On Tuesday afternoon there will be a parallel session in the main hall (the 'Red Hall') on Re-use of structural steel with lectures by, among others, Pim Peters (IMd Consulting Engineers) and Menno Rubbens (cepezed projects), followed by a parallel session on the Influence of the new Eurocodes . The Tuesday will be festively concluded with the presentation of the ECCS Design Awards and a 'get together' with drinks and snacks. The language on stage is English. Catering, lunch and drinks are included in the price (220.-).

Meer...

In addition, there are 10 parallel sessions in which scientists from all over the world go into more depth on specific topics. A selection of the topics: composite steel-concrete constructions, reuse and transformation, techniques to increase construction speed, high-strength steel, 3D printing, machine learning, etc. The website contains an extensive list of all parallel sessions and the program.

A post-conference event will be organized in Deflt on Friday 15 September, where colleagues from RWTH Aachen and University of Liège will join ETH and TUD. There they will have an open discussion about the future of steel and composite constructions at our universities. And how to attract talented students to tackle important research topics. Everyone is invited to this informal meeting with some outdoor activities.

Background re-use of structural steel

The Rijksvastgoedbedrijjf (Central Government Real Estate Agency) and Bouwen met Staal have jointly taken the initiative to take the first step towards a standard procedure for the reuse of structural steel. Together with a variety of partners and under the guidance of standardization organization NEN, they have developed a Dutch Technical Agreement (NTA) that supports the larger-scale reuse of structural steel.

It goes without saying that safety was the guiding principle for the preparation of this NTA. That is why the NTA fits in with the Bouwbesluit (Building Decree) and NEN-EN 1993 (Eurocode 3: Design and calculation of steel structures). NEN-EN 1993 and the Building Decree provide requirements based on new structural steel. The NTA helps to draw up an inspection document that contains the information needed to apply previously used steel. This procedure makes it possible to demonstrate that the building regulations are being complied with. The course Reuse of Structural Steel discusses this in more detail.
