Under the title as well as main theme ‘The Essence of Structural Engineering for Society’ the congress at the historical Ghent City Hall addresses social-relevant topics like safety and reliability of structures, monitoring and maintenance of new and existing structures of buildings and infrastructure, and sustainability and circularity.

Within the spirit of IABSE, all kinds of structures in all types of building materials come into congress-view. All preparations for the event are taken care of by a Dutch-Belgian organising committee, chaired by dr. H. De Backer from Belgium, and the Scientific Committee, co-chaired by dr. H.H. Snijder and dr. D. Leonetti of the Netherlands.
